Xanthelasma palpebra is a common skin condition that appears on your eyelids. It presents itself as yellowish, flat growth on the area of the eyelid that’s near the nose. Because of the yellowish tinge, these flat growths resemble butter beans.
Xanthelasma is harmless and causes no pain. You can leave them as it is; however, they certainly affect the way you look. Removing them is easy though. Be sure to consult the specialists at our electrolysis clinic in Leeds to know more about our treatment procedure.
What Causes Xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma is a rare condition but some people can be affected by it if they have high levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood. However, people who do not suffer from cholesterol have also been affected by the condition.
Certain liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis that leads to cholesterol build-up can also cause xanthelasma.
Who are Susceptible
Although painless on its own, xanthelasma is often an indication that your cholesterol level is rising.
Research indicates that almost half the people affected by this condition have high levels of cholesterol. You are more likely to get this flat growth on your eyelids if you have high levels of LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), also known as bad cholesterol or low levels of HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), also known as good cholesterol.
So if you see these flat, yellowish growths on your eyelids, it’s best to visit a doctor and get your blood tested for cholesterol.
You can also get xanthelasma through your genes if your family has a history of high cholesterol.
The condition is more commonly seen in the elderly and among women as compared to men. People whose families originated in the Mediterranean region or in Asia are seen to be more susceptible to xanthelasma.
Treating Xanthelasma
When you visit our aesthetic electrolysis clinic in Leeds, we begin the treatment procedure with an initial consultation. You will be asked all about you and your family’s medical history, especially with reference to cholesterol. Our specialist will also want to see your blood reports or advise you to get one done.
Once we are satisfied with your physical condition, the actual treatment begins. At our specialized electrolysis clinic in Leeds, we treat xanthelasma with diathermy.
It is an almost painless procedure wherein low levels of electricity are introduced into the fat growth through a fine needle. The heat of the current dissolves the growths till they reduce in size and become almost invisible.
